About the Little Sisters of the Assumption

The Little Sisters of the Assumption is an international congregation living in 21 countries.

We are called:

  • to generate a culture of peace and non – violence
  • to develop the feminine dimensions of tenderness, of attention to life and to reconciliation
  • to promote respect for human rights and attention to the care of the earth

We are committed to working with families and individuals to create a more just and caring world – to reach out to the least advantaged people on the margins of society.

Industrialization began in France in the 19th Century and brought with it enormous poverty especially amongst the working class and those on the margins of society. Family life suffered. In 1865 Fr. Etienne Pernet together with Antoinette Fage responded to this reality and founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Assumption. Their mission was to ‘nurse the sick poor in their own homes’, to be with them in times of need, worries, sickness and family upset and through simple acts of service to alleviate suffering.

To day the work of the Congregation which is in 23 Countries, is mainly focused on the ‘Family’ and Community Work in the following areas:

You will go everywhere because the poor are everywhere (Fr. E. Pernet)

Our mission calls us to work for Justice, Peace and Non Violence and Care of the Earth.

In the Anglo-Celtic Province we are in Ireland, England and Wales.
